Armenian defense minister: Situation on the border and line of contact with Azerbaijan is under control
The situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and the line of contact between the armed forces of Karabakh and Azerbaijan is under control, but Azerbaijan is trying to create tension, although the Armenian side observed the ceasefire, moreover, exercised restraint during the European Games in Azerbaijan, Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan said at the government session today when presenting the current situation.
In his words, following the European Games, the tension has been rising at one point and declining at another. “Our neighbors try to derive political or economic dividends. Ceasefire violations are committed with small arms of various calibers as well as 60 mm, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. In the past few days the enemy also made several subversive-reconnaissance infiltration attempts that were foiled by the Armenian side,” he said.
The defense minister of Armenia said that Azerbaijan escalates the situation in response to the Armenian side’s statements about the need to resolve the conflict by peaceful means and for that purpose to observe the ceasefire on the line of contact, create an atmosphere of mutual trust, and introduce mechanisms of international investigation of ceasefire violations.
Seyran Ohanyan stressed that the Armenian armed forces perform their duties excellently. “We have performed out tasks and are ready to develop deterrent mechanisms,” he added.
