Armenia hit by record heat in summer 2015
The heat wave in Armenia in the summer of 2015 is unprecedented: the heat wave that affected the country this year is the longest in duration over the past 170 years, the deputy head of the weather service of Armenian Ministry of Territorial Administration and Emergency Situations Gagik Surenyan told a press conference today.
According to him, Armenia has suffered three major heat waves that came in from Saudi Arabia and Iraq in July and August 2015. The daily temperatures averaged 6-7 degrees above normal.
As regards the forecasts for coming days, he said that no considerable changes are expected in the next five days. August 15 and 16 are expected to be the hottest, with temperatures reaching a high of +40 - +41 degrees Celsius. By the way, temperatures earlier stay at 40 degrees for one or two hours a day, while now they will last over 3 hours.
Surenyan said that a rise in night temperatures has been forecast. In the last two days, night temperatures in Yerevan ranged from +22 to +23 degrees Celsius, whereas on August 15 and 16 temperatures will stay above +27 - +28 degrees at night.
Temperatures will drop by 1-2 degrees on August 17-18, but are expected to rise again on August 19 when they reach +40 - +41 degrees and remain at that level on August 20-21.
Statistics show that temperatures in Yerevan hit 40 degrees Celsius every five years, while this year temperatures reached and topped +40 degrees for 10 days, the weather official said.
The highest temperatures are expected in Syunik province’s valleys where temperatures could reach +42 degrees. The weather will be cooler in Lori, Shirak and Gegharkunik provinces and in mountainous areas of Vayots Dzor province.
