Bangkok blast in tourist hotspot leaves 15 dead
A bomb exploded near a popular Hindu shrine in central Bangkok on Monday, killing 15 people and injuring many more, according to police.
Police chief PrawutThawornsiri said the blast, near a shrine at a major Bangkok intersection, was caused by a bomb, Rediff.com reported.
The possible terror attack, which took place happened near the Erawan Shrine, next to a five-star hotel, in the centre of the Thai capital’s Chidlom district.
The shrine is to the Hindu god Brahma, but is also a centre of worship for Buddhists.
The explosion was at the Rajprasong intersection, which is often used for political demonstrations.
Thai deputy national police chief AekAngsananond said: "All I can say now is there has been an explosion in central Bangkok involving a motorcycle bomb."
Witnesses said victims were ‘blown to pieces’ after the explosion.
The Bangkok Post reported that another device was found and safely removed by a bomb disposal team about an hour later.
Officers and emergency services are still at the scene, where witnesses reported bodies covered in sheets and body parts strewn on the ground between burning vehicles.
Police believe the first bomb may have been attached to a motorbike.
