Expert: Progress in Karabakh settlement depends on sides’ readiness for compromise
It is unrealistic to expect a resolution to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict in the short run, Paul Stronski, a senior associate in Carnegie’s Russia and Eurasia Program, said during an online press conference today held by the Region research center.
Besides, the truth is that progress depends on the readiness of Armenia and Azerbaijan to make compromises, the expert said noting that given the recent rhetoric in the region and the recent clashes along the line of contact between troops and the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, he, unfortunately, does not see any indications that a compromise could be reached.
In that connection Paul Stronski said he does not set high hopes on the upcoming meeting of the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan in September. The expert said he has followed such meetings between the presidents of the two countries for over ten years, expressing an opinion that the sides will discuss bilateral economic and security issues, with Karabakh being only part of them.
