S. Zolyan: Armenian government had no right to sell Demirchyan SCC
Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex (SCC) in Yerevan is one of the remarkable cultural monuments of our city, a unique architectural structure with its clear functions, and the Armenian government had no right to sell it, the political scientist, member of the Public Council of Armenia Suren Zolyan said at a press conference today.
“By what authority did the government act as a seller? The property was placed at the disposal of the government. To dispose of a property does not mean to put it up for sale,” S. Zolyan noted.
He said the impression is that in Armenia property is transferred to some groups which, being unable to dispose of it, sell it at low prices.
“Instead of opening entertainment centers, it would be better to create new jobs. As if all the problems are solved, and the only remaining issue is organizing entertainment activities,” Public Council member said resentfully.
To remind, on August 13 the Armenian government took a decision to sell Karen Demirchyan SCC state non-profit organization on the balance sheet of Defense Ministry to NTAA Investment Group. The sales price is $30 million. It is planned to repair the building of SCC and construct a family complex comprised of a hotel, an indoor water park, concert halls, restaurants, shops, and a casino. The complex will be the first of its kind in Armenia and the whole region. The project is expected to be completed in 4 years.
Meanwhile, after the August 20 sitting of Republican Party of Armenia’s Executive Body, RPA’s spokesman, vice speaker of the Armenian government Edward Sharmazanov said that there will be no casino in the Demirchyan Complex.
“There will be no processes to distort the architectural design of the Complex. I insist that there cannot and will not be a casino in SCC,” he said.
