Artak Zakaryan: Position of constitutional reform opponents should strengthen, otherwise it will be a whim
Statements against the constitutional reform in Armenia should not be an end in itself, MP of ‘Republican Party of Armenia’ (RPA) parliamentary faction Artak Zakaryan told a press conference today.
He said that opinions of all the opponents of the constitutional reform are taken into account if they offer sound arguments.
“During debates in the National Assembly of Armenia, the position of opponents of the constitutional reform should strengthen politically, otherwise it will become a political whim,” the deputy said.
According to Zakaryan, the draft should be worked out and agreed as much as possible before it is put on a referendum. Prior to the vote, it is necessary to ensure society’s confidence in the planned reforms which serve the interests of everyone.
“Society will have the last say,” the MP stressed.
As was reported, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan submitted on August 21 the draft amendments in the Constitution of Armenia to the National Assembly. The draft amendments had been developed by the Commission on Constitutional Reforms under Armenian President. Vardan Poghosyan, a member of the Commission, has been appointed as official representative of Armenian President for presentation of the draft amendments to the Constitution in the National Assembly of Armenia. This week President Serzh Sargsyan plans to begin consultations with representatives of political parties regarding the approaches stated in the draft Constitution. The head of state also instructed the Commission on Constitutional Reforms under Armenian President to continue the dialog with the Venice Commission (VC) over those issues indicated in the VC’s preliminary opinion, around which no agreed solutions have been found so far.
