Thalassaemia, syphilis and AIDS are problems young couples getting married face in Azerbaijan
In Azerbaijan, some young people, who are going to get married, are diagnosed with diseases like AIDS and syphilis. Every seventh couple receiving medical care is diagnosed with thalassaemia, a blood disorder. However, none of them changes their mind about getting married, Chief Hematologist of the Health Ministry of Azerbaijan, Chingiz Asadov, said, according to Faktxeber.com.
Azerbaijani Parliament adopted a law, which demands all the couples planning to get married to submit a medical certificate about their health condition to the register office, otherwise their marriage will be denied official registration. The law came into force on 1 June 2015, Faktxeber.com notes.
Azerbaijan’s Chief Hematologist said 33,412 people went through medical examination since 1 June of this year in accord with the Law on undergoing medical examination of the people wishing to get married, and 135 of them were found out to suffer from dangerous diseases.
“There is no problem, when one person in the couple has thalassaemia. But if both of them have thalassaemia, the children born to them will likely suffer from the blood disorder. Therefore, we do not recommend them to get married. In case they get married and the woman is pregnant, we advise them to turn to the Hematology and Transfusiology Institute. Some young people were discovered to have syphilis and AIDS. Their data were sent to the AIDS treatment center. I don’t think any of these couples will insist on getting married as today everyone realizes that this marriage will result in them infecting each other,” Asadov said.
