Over 40 thousand children go into first grade this year – Armenian education ministry
About 400 thousand children will study at schools in Armenia in the 2015-2016 academic year. Over 40,000 of them will go into the first grade compared with 38,000 last year, Narine Hovhannisyan, Head of General Education Department of Armenian Ministry of Education and Science, told reporters today.
According to her, all secondary schools of Armenia have first graders, except about ten schools in border regions. Private schools do not affect state-funded schools, that is, the number of pupils of state-funded schools has not declined because of private schools, N. Hovhannisyan said.
The department head announced that the number of the schools not funded by the state has been reduced from 50 to 40.
“It is up to parents to decide whether to send their children to a state school or a private one,” she said.
Textbooks are distributed free to pupils studying in first to fourth grades, while those in grades 5 – 12 will continue to borrow textbooks.
The department head said that ‘National song and dance’ subject will be taught in 100 schools after it was taught under a pilot program in 13 schools of Armenia last year. Teachers are now undergoing training.
