Human rights defender to state his position on draft Constitution without politicizing issue
Human Rights Defender of Armenia (HRD) Karen Andreasyan has already received the draft amendments to the Constitution of Armenia and in the next few days he will present his expert opinion about the document, especially with regard to the articles and provisions on human rights protection.
K. Andreasyan told reporters after the government session today that the opinion will address both negative and positive amendments to the Constitution.
He said that the Office of HRD will maintain neutrality concerning the constitutional reforms and a planned referendum, and in order to avoid politicizing the office led by him, he will join neither supporters of the constitutional amendments nor those opposed to them. For the same reason he declined to answer the question about the need to carry out a constitutional reform in Armenia.
In his words, the Office of HRD will be ready to answer all questions of citizens about advantages and shortcomings of the draft new Constitution, but without further comments. “And then it will be up to the public to decide whether to say yes or no during the possible referendum,” Andreasyan said.
