Defense Ministry spokesman: No provocation of Azerbaijani troops will go without response
There was heavy gunfire from positions of Azerbaijani troops Thursday evening, September 3. The Azerbaijani side used small arms of various calibers and mortars at the border with Armenia and on the line of contact between the armed forces of Karabakh and Azerbaijan, the spokesman for Armenian Defense Ministry Artsrun Hovhannisyan said at a meeting with journalists today.
In his words, Azerbaijan stopped firing late at night after the Armenian side took actions in response.
The ministry spokesman said three civilians in Vazashen community of Armenia’s Tavush province and a contract serviceman were wounded by Azerbaijani fire. They were hospitalized as they received light wounds and are now out of danger.
According to Hovnannisyan, fewer shots were fired on the evening of September 3 and last night. “Let’s hope for a decline in tension,” he noted.
Commenting on artificial escalation of the tension,” A. Hovhannisyan said: “I should say that two days ago a spokesman for Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, while pretending to be a saint, tried to spread false information and speak of international humanitarian law. Meanwhile, Azerbaijani troops were provoking tension”.
“Naturally, Armenian servicemen could not leave this without a response. We can see the consequences of the response measures in the Azerbaijani press, including the panic that arose there, and the difficult situation that emerged, and residents leaving their homes and building barriers so as to deal with the panic. In Tavush province of Armenia, residents are quietly busy with their affairs,” the ministry official said.
He stressed that no provocation will go without a response, adding that the Armenian side has always spoken in favor of defusing the tension. “We did not provoke anything,” he said.
The situation on the border is calm at the moment. Tension usually heightens in the evenings, he noted.
