Haykakan Zhamanak: PM’s statement in Grodno may affect negatively relations with West
Prime Minister of Armenia Hovik Abrahamyan said yesterday at the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Grodno: “Of importance is the idea of conducting mutual trade in strategic goods among the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member states on the basis of the ruble, without dependence on the dollar”.
‘Haykakan Zhamanak’ daily says that energy carriers, for which Armenia makes payments in dollars to Russia, are first of all meant by saying “strategic goods”.
The Armenian prime minister should know well that it is Russia that opposes the sale of ‘strategic goods’ to Armenia in rubles, and that option was not discussed by the Russian authorities.
In parallel with this, some high-ranking Russian officials have recently begun to make statements about the need to abandon the dollar in trade with various countries and use the national currency. For Russia, it evidently represents anti-Western propaganda.
With his statement yesterday, H. Abrahamyan joined that propaganda that has no economic prospects, but may lead to serious negative consequences in relations between Armenia and the West.
