Diplomat: Escalation of situation in Turkey also poses threat to Armenia
The present situation in Turkey poses a threat to Armenia as well, the former Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Arman Navasardyan told a press conference today.
The situation in Turkey has sharply escalated in recent months after the Islamic State carried out a bombing attack in Suruc on the border with Syia and Turkish police officers were killed in the country’s southeast, with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) claiming responsibility for their killing. On July 24, 2015 Turkish troops attacked positions of the Islamic State in the north of Syria and PKK’s positions in northern Iraq, using F-16 fighter jets, tanks and artillery. In response, PKK stated on its website that the peace process with Ankara lost its meaning. Turkish President Erdogan also rejected the peace process.
Arman Navasardyan found it difficult to say anything about the outcome of the ongoing developments. “The U.S. is more delighted to help the Kurds struggling to create their own state. If this happens, the U.S. will have a new ally,” the diplomat said.
He also stressed that the overthrow of the Assad government in Syria may mark the beginning of a serious tragedy as it is first of all non-Muslims who will be exposed to danger.
Besides, in his words, this will clear the way for the Islamic State terrorist group. When asked if ISIL poses a threat to Armenia, Navasardyan replied that even most optimistic political scientists believe that it does.
