UN General Assembly adopts Armenia-initiated resolution for International Day of Commemoration of Genocide Victims
On September 11 the UN General Assembly passed a resolution establishing 9 December as the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime. The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect said in a statement that it commends the Republic of Armenia for their leadership on this issue as well as the more than 80 member states who co-sponsored the resolution. On 9 December the Global Centre will join the international community in commemorating and honoring the victims of this most horrific crime.
Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Zohrab Mnatsakanyan said in his speech in the UN General Assembly that the resolution follows another document – the 27-page resolution on the prevention of genocide adopted in March at the 28th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva. The resolution was introduced by Armenia.
Zohrab Mnatsakanyan recalled that the UNHRC recommended in clause 22 of the resolution that the UN General Assembly designate December 9 as the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of Genocide in order to raise awareness of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and its role in combating and preventing the crime of genocide.
