V. Poghosyan: After constitutional reform, Serzh Sargsyan has no intention of becoming parliament speaker
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has no intention of becoming speaker of Armenia’s National Assembly following the constitutional amendments, the president’s official representative on constitutional reform issues in the parliament Vardan Poghosyan said today in the National Assembly.
The eighth session of the National Assembly of 5th convocation began yesterday, on September 15. The parliament started the first four-day sitting with debates of the draft constitutional amendments presented by Vardan Poghosyan.
In response to the remark of the opposition ‘Armenian National Congress’ faction’s leader Levon Zurabyan that Serzh Sargsyan has never declared publicly he is not going to assume the post of parliamentary speaker, Vardan Poghosyan replied:
“It is generally known that after a transition to a parliamentary system of government, Serzh Sargsyan has no intention of aspiring to the post of speaker of the National Assembly. This well-known fact has been confirmed by the incumbent president of Armenia via various channels”.
To remind, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan submitted on August 21 the draft amendments in the Constitution of Armenia to the National Assembly. The draft amendments had been developed by the Specialized Commission on Constitutional Reforms adjunct to Armenian President. Vardan Poghosyan, a member of the Commission, has been appointed as official representative of Armenian President for presentation of the draft amendments to the Constitution in the National Assembly of Armenia. Besides, Serzh Sargsyan has already held consultations on the approaches stated in the draft new Constitution with representatives of various political parties.
