Sharmazanov: Constitutional amendments package unrelated to Serzh Sargsyan’s political fate
During debates of the draft amendments to the Constitution of Armenia, the vice speaker of the Armenian parliament Edward Sharmazanov urged members of opposition factions to show restraint and respect their colleagues’ opinions.
“There is no need to teach us some good sense. You are not teachers, and we are not students. We never allow ourselves to speak like this with the political minority,” he told opposition representatives.
Sharmazanov noted that the political boycott previously mentioned by opposition members did not take place: the representatives of the political forces that had declared a boycott took part in meaningful discussions, including the recent parliamentary hearings.
Besides, according to the vice speaker, representatives of various political forces had meetings with President Serzh Sargsyan to discuss the constitutional reform, which shows “the existence of a political consensus concerning the process of reforms”.
“It is necessary to switch to a 100% proportional electoral system, to balance all the branches of power, and eliminate administration from a single center. You stated all this so what’s the matter? What are you opposed to? Why are you against a switch to the proportional system? Are you against an increase in powers of the opposition? Are you against the fact that that we will elect prosecutor general, ombudsman, CEC chairman and other officials jointly with the opposition? Do you refuse to participate in the process of appointing most important officials? Are you against giving the opposition serious supervisory functions? The whole package of constitutional reforms should not be linked to the political fate of one figure. The constitutional reform package has nothing to do with the political fate of Serzh Sargsyan. I ask you to refrain from petty profiteering,” E. Sharmazanov said.
