Aram Manukyan: This is draft of a completely new Basic Law, rather than constitutional amendments
Armenia will not be able to bear the burden to be imposed on the country by the amendments to the Constitution, the secretary of the opposition ‘Armenian National Congress’ parliamentary faction Aram Manukyan told reporters today.
“These are not amendments, but a new concept, a new constitution that differs considerably from the Basic Law currently in force. If the amendments are approved, it will take 10 years to implement them,” the MP noted.
Manukyan expressed an opinion that Armenia will not be able to ‘digest’ the reform that cardinally changes the existing order.
As a result of these changes, the mechanism of holding elections will be revised, the oppositionist said. He also stressed that the parliamentary system of government – the draft constitutional amendments envisage a switch to the parliamentary model – cannot urgently solve problems in times of war.
“Serious political clashes will take place as a result of these changes. Dirty political races will start for voting lists, they have already started,” Aram Manukyan said, calling the constitutional reform process an ‘adventure’.
