NSS head and prosecutor general of Armenia comment on VahanMartirosyan’s crossing into Azerbaijan
“I don’t see anything strange. It’s elementary. Anyone can cross the border of Georgia and find oneself in Azerbaijan”, Director of the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia Gorik Hakobyan said in Yerevan’s Yerablur Military Cemetery when he was asked by reporters how the leader of Intra-National Liberation Movement initiative VahanMartirosyan was able to cross Armenia’s border and find himself in Azerbaijan.
The Armenian Police Chief Vladimir Gasparyan declined to comment, while Prosecutor General GevorgKostanyan recalled that a criminal case was opened against VahanMarrtirosyan even before he crossed the border.
“A charge was brought against him. He was released on his own recognizance. It is not always that a person can be immediately detained and arrested. There have been many cases when there were not enough grounds to deprive a person of liberty. And it is not always that in case of a crime, we can hold a man in custody thinking that he may commit treason,’ he said.
The prosecutor general indicated the need to find out if the preliminary investigation body took V. Martirosyan’s passport when choosing a measure of restraint for him.
Azerbaijani media reported earlier that VahanMartirosyan applied for political asylum in Azerbaijan. In this connection advisor to the Investigative Committee’s chairman SonaTruzyan told Panorama.am thatVahanMartirosyan was wanted since September 9 as Armenian law enforces brought a grand theft charge against him.
