Armenia celebrates Independence Day today
Armenia celebrates Independence Day today. On this day in 1991 the Armenian people in a national referendum voted for the declaration of independence from the Soviet Union, of which the republican was a part from 1921.
By a decision of the Supreme Council of Armenia, on that day a referendum was held on the secession from the USSR and the creation of an independent state of Armenia. 99% of the voters voted yes.
Two days later, on September 23 the Supreme Council declared Armenia an independent state.
