No rabies case reported in Armenia since 2009: expert
The fight against rabies still remains a serious problem in many countries, but in Armenia no cases of rabies in humans have been reported since 2009, Liana Torosyan - Head of Unit of Epidemiology of Respiratory Infections and Especially Dangerous Diseases of the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention – told a press conference today.
Today, September 28 is World Rabies Day, which has been observed since 2007.
The expert said that rabies cases were last reported in Armenia in 2008 and 2009, in Shirak and Lori provinces. All the three cases resulted in the patients’ deaths.
According to L. Torosyan, 2,600 people suffered animal bites in Armenia in 2014, with 900 cases being recorded in Yerevan alone. There were 2,700 cases in 2013, including 1000 cases in the capital city.
“These statistics show one again the problem of stray animals has not yet been solved in Armenia,: she said.
