Armenian prosecutor general orders seizure of passports of those freed on recognizance - after Vahan Martirosyan’s case
Armenian Prosecutor General Gevorg Kostanyan has ordered prosecutors of the country to provide investigators with the opportunity to seize passports of persons who are a suspect or a defendant in a case and were released on their own recognizance, with the aim of preventing them from leaving Armenia. Gevorg Kostanyan said this during a briefing today, when asked by a reporter how the leader of Intra-National Liberation Movement initiative Vahan Martirosyan managed to cross the Armenian border and find himself in the territory of Azerbaijan.
The prosecutor general said that there is no such mandatory rule in the Armenian law, and the decision on expediency of seizing a passport is left to the discretion of investigators. “I gave that instruction to avoid such cases,” G. Kostanyan explained.
To remind, Azerbaijani media earlier reported that Vahan Martirosyan applied for political asylum in Azerbaijan. In this connection advisor to the chairman of Armenia’s Investigative Committee Sona Truzyan told Panorama.am that Vahan Martirosyan has been wanted by the police since September 9. He is accused of grand theft.
