President Sargsyan, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon discuss Karabakh settlement
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met in New York on September 28 on the sidelines of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the press service of Armenian president reported.
Serzh Sargsyan congratulated Ban Ki-moon on the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. He said that since becoming a member of the UN 23 years ago, Armenia has always felt the organization’s assistance in establishing its statehood.
At the meeting the interlocutors discussed the negotiations on a resolution to the Karabakh problem. The president informed Ban Ki-moon about the current stage of the process, the existing problems, and tensions arising due to ceasefire violations by Azerbaijan, in particular the latest tensions on Armenia-Azerbaijan border and Karabakh-Azerbaijan line of contact.
The UN Secretary-General expressed his concern over the tense situation and stressed the importance of the conflict resolution through the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs.
Ban Ki-moon thanked Armenia for providing shelter to refugees from northern Iraq and Syria. He underlined the significance of the upcoming forum in Yerevan on peacekeeping challenges.
