At UN, Armenian president brought several important messages to international community, K. Bekaryan says
The speech of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan at the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly contained quite a profound discussion of the Karabakh conflict’s peaceful settlement, the current situation, and the recent escalation, MP of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Karen Bekaryan told a press conference today.
In his words, the speech of the head of state had a thesis that Azerbaijan’s actions show the international community that the country is unwilling to follow a path of conflict resolution, with provocations being Baku’s style.
The MP said the Armenian president highlighted the following issues in his speech: the withdrawal of snipers from the frontline and the investigation of border incidents – the Azerbaijani side rejects the proposals, and also Baku’s refusal to ensure greater security of the borders and respect the ceasefire. The Armenian president thus demonstrated the groundlessness of Baku’s constant claims about the culprit behind border incidents, Bekaryan said.
He also indicated the president’s statement about a qualitative change in Baku’s policy aimed at creating tension in border areas: Azerbaijani troops have intensified firing at Armenian settlements and began using new types of weapons. Bekaryan stressed that it was important to voice that statement from the high rostrum of the UN so as to bring to the international community the idea that Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh can rely only on their army.
Bekaryan said the speech of President Sargsyan at the 70th session of the UNGA was of particular importance as the international community should know the reason for Armenia’s counteractions, the fact that being a neighbor of Azerbaijan means not having security guarantees.
Bekaryan also pointed out the president’s statement to the effect that the Azerbaijani authorities escalate the border situation in order to distract their population’s attention from domestic problems.
Commenting on the meeting of Serzh Sargsyan with the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York, Karen Bekaryan said: “I have no doubt that at the meeting the Armenian side expressed deep concern over the vague, allegedly balanced statements and calls of the mediators. It is high time for the international community to realize their responsibility”.
