Constitutional reform opponents stage rally in Liberty Square of Yerevan
After a recent rally in Gyumri, opponents of the constitutional reform in Armenia are going to stage a rally in Yerevan’s Liberty Square for the first time, civic activist Hrayr Manukyan said during a Facebook press conference held by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
In the words of David Hovhannisyan – another member of “No” movement against the constitutional reform, today’s event in the capital city aims to inform the public of the existing situation.
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan submitted on August 21 the draft amendments in the Constitution of Armenia to the National Assembly. The draft amendments had been developed by the Commission on Constitutional Reforms adjunct to the Armenian President.
Vardan Poghosyan, a member of the Commission, was appointed as official representative of Armenian President for presentation of the draft amendments to the Constitution in the National Assembly of Armenia. On September 11 the draft amendments received a positive opinion of the Armenian parliament’s standing committee on state and legal affairs, which was followed by the draft’s debates in the National Assembly. Serzh Sargsyan has already held consultations on the approaches stated in the draft new Constitution with representatives of various political parties.
