E. Sharmazanov: Draft amendments to Armenia’s Constitution being finalized
The draft amendments to the Constitution of Armenia are being finalized. The draft will be put to the vote at the upcoming four-day sittings of the parliament, spokesman for the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), vice speaker of the Armenian parliament Edward Sharmazanov said after the sitting of RPA Executive Body yesterday, on October 2.
According to him, several changes have been made to the text of the draft, in particular to the provision on formation of a stable majority in the parliament. According to the changes, holding a second round of parliamentary elections is not mandatory.
The draft has been amended, with proposals of various parliamentary factions being taken into account, Sharmazanov said.
The spokesman for RPA stressed again that the draft Constitution prepared by the Specialized Commission on Constitutional Reforms adjunct to Armenian President is more democratic than the Constitution currently in force, and the rights of the political opposition will be expanded as a result of the reform.
