October 9 is Day of Mountains and Alpinists in Armenia
For the third year in a row, October 9 is observed as the Day of Mountains and Alpinists in Armenia, after Armenia’s Federation of Alpinism and Mountain Tourism came up with the initiative in 2013.
Federation members will summarize the results of the first half of 2015, and the winners of “Man in the Mountains’ photo contest will be announced. Diplomas will be given to the participants of international ascents.
October 9 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the day (October 9, 1829) when Armenian writer and public figure Khachatur Abovian and the team led by Prof. Friedrich Parrot of Dorpat University reached the summit of Mount Ararat for the first time.
The Federation has had serious achievements this year: since January 2015, members of the Federation and mountaineering enthusiasts made 20 ascents of the world’s highest peaks such as Elbrus (5642 meters), Kazbek (5033 m), and Demavend (5610 m).
150 alpinists took part in the ascents, making it a record number for the Federation. The number of Federation members has also increased from 50 to 80.
