Azerbaijan: Pepsi company worker commits public self-immolation
Pepsi-Cola company worker poured petrol over himself and set himself to fire on the roof of his house in Binagadi district, Baku, Haqqin.az reports.
According to the report, Alekper Zakhid Oglu Mammadov, born in 1988, protested against the court decision to demolish his illegally constructed house. Mammadov’s house is reportedly constructed on a land belonging to another person.
Binagadi district executives were also present at the scene of the incident as they had arrived with the heavy equipment to pull down the house, Haqqin.az writes.
Mammadov was taken to Baku burn center with burns of various degrees of severity and died there. The district Prosecutor's Office investigates the case. A criminal case has been initiated under the Article 125 (inciting suicide) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.
Earlier, a Karabakh-war-disabled, Ayaz Huseynov, had died in hospital ten days after burning himself in the yard of the TV channel ANS in Sabail raion, Baku. Oxu.az reported that his mother Sonakhanum Huseynova said Ayaz Huseynov, 42, had committed self-immolation because of a land lot conflict with the municipality.
A land lot in the settlement Zikh was promised to be issued to Ayaz Huseynov after he returned from the front. “However, the land lot was never given to us. They said the territory was an oil field. Later I again wrote a letter to the Surakhan district executives, but I was told at the municipality that they could not issue land to me,” Huseynova said. Instead, she said, the executives promised to employ Ayaz in brickworks. Still, this did not work, too. That is why Ayaz took that step.
She further said that when Ayaz set himself to fire in the yard of ANS, one of the workers attempted to help him and burnt his hands. Ayaz burnt 85% of his body. He died after being in coma for 10 days.
There have been numerous reports about demonstrative self-immolation in Azerbaijan, committed by people disabled at Karabakh war, displaced persons, as well as average citizens, who were in extreme poverty. On 27 July, Muhammad Aliyev, from Sumgait, died in Republic burn center after a demonstrative act of self-immolation in front of the place he worked because of not having been paid for six months. Earlier, Mirtahir Mursalov, Karabakh war veteran, committed self-immolation in front of the building of the Jalilabad district police. His brother Mirkamil Mursalov said that Mirtahir had burnt himself to protest against the district administration not dealing with his problem.
