International Association of Genocide Scholars urges German authorities to recognize Armenian Genocide
The International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) sent letters to the president of the German Bundestag, the chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Bundestag , and the leaders of two ruling parties – the Christian Democratic Union of Germany and the Social Democratic Party of Germany, urging them to expedite the adoption by the German parliament of the resolution recognizing and condemning the 1915 Armenian Genocide.
The genocide scholars who have signed the letter wrote in particular: “We call on German legislators in this centennial year of 2015 to officially resolve in written form the forceful legal opinions made by speakers of all parliamentary factions on, April 24, 2015, confirming the genocide against the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek populations of the Ottoman Empire”.
“We believe German leadership will help Turkey to address its own struggles with historical memory and will help support progressive forces inside Turkey, and Turkey’s forward progress as a proud nation,” the letter notes.
It is noteworthy that in 2007 the International Association of Genocide Scholars recognized and condemned the Armenian Genocide.
