Genocide scholars call upon the Germany to acknowledge Armenian Genocide
The International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) has sent official letters to the President of the German Bundestag (parliament), the chairman of the Foreign Committee of the German Bundestag, as well as the two heads of parliamentary fractions of ruling Christian Democrat Union (CDU) and Social Democrat (SPD) political parties. In the letter the undersigned scholars called upon the parliamentary leadership of Germany to speed up the adoption of resolution affirming the Armenian Genocide in the Bundestag.
The authors of the four letters wrote, in particular: “We call on German legislators in this centennial year of 2015 to officially resolve in written form the forceful legal opinions made by speakers of all parliamentary factions on, April 24, 2015, confirming the genocide against the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek populations of the Ottoman Empire”.
“We believe German leadership will help Turkey to address its own struggles with historical memory and will help support progressive forces inside Turkey, and Turkey’s forward progress as a proud nation” – the scholars conclude.
The letters have been signed by prominent genocide scholars, members of The International Association of Genocide Scholars, such as Franck Chalk, Israel Charny, Daniel Feierstein, William Schabas, Roger Smith and others.
