Media reports: Soldiers convicted for a slap, war disabled forgotten in Azerbaijan
The chairman of Azerbaijan Committee against Torture, Elchin Behbudov, visited the penal military unit of the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan in the village Khidirli, Salyan district, Modern.az reports.
After visit, Behbudov told the website that he had met convicted soldiers there, who had committed crimes during their military service.
“There are up to 50 of them,” he said.
According to the rights defender, some soldiers in the penal military unit serve up to ten-year’s sentences. Some convicts are complaining of poor conditions in the detention.
“There are soldiers who are dissatisfied with the decision of the court and the investigation process. The conversations with some of them made it clear that they can be sentenced even because of a slap or a dirty word. I agree with them, because there are detention facilities in the military units for that purpose, and the soldiers have a 15-day punishment there,” Behbudov added.
Turan agency reports that a commemoration ceremony of the members of the Azerbaijan Ministry of Defense reconnaissance group, liquidated in 1997 during sabotage against the NKR, took place on the Second Alley of Honor, Baku, on 16 October.
The sabotage group was liquidated by the NKR Defense Army. Agil Akhmedov, having II group disability, was the only one to be saved out of the eight members of the group. According to Turan, 18 years after their death, the parents of the late saboteurs expressed discontent over the indifference of the military leadership of Azerbaijan and the executive power.
They are also dissatisfied that the only survivor of the group, Agil Akhmedov, has not received a proper medical treatment abroad so far, and still lives with shrapnel stuck in his body.
