Chakryan: Turkish media not particularly inspired by ECHR ruling in Perincek v. Switzerland case
The problem of the Armenian Genocide committed in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 requires a comprehensive approach: it is necessary to achieve recognition in the first phase and criminalization the Genocide denial in the second phase, Hakob Chakryan, an expert on Turkey, told a press conference today.
“We reached tangible success in the first phase, and there has also been some progress during the second stage - concerning criminalization of the Armenian Genocide denial,” Chakryan noted.
Speaking about the reaction of the Turkish mass media to the judgment delivered by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in the case of Perincek v. Switzerland, Hakob Chakryan said the ruling did not cause any particular enthusiasm.
As was reported, on October 15 the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) delivered its judgment of the case of Perinçek v. Switzerland (application no. 27510/08). ECHR in Strasbourg ruled that Switzerland violated the leader of Turkish Workers’ Party Doğu Perinçek's right to freedom of speech. The ECHR decision is final.
