Expert: Crisis in Russia-Turkey relations may affect Karabakh conflict
Relations between Moscow and Ankara are not at their best now as Turkey, which is strongly opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, is among those critical of Russia’s military air operations in Syria, and this situation may have an indirect impact on the Karabakh conflict, the head of Modus Vivendi Center Ara Papyan told a press conference in Yerevan today. Russian intervention in the Syrian crisis has qualitatively changed the situation, he added.
The expert considered it unlikely that Turkey will intervene in the Karabakh conflict as Turkey is facing many problems within the country and outside it.
“If the Russian-Turkish conflict worsens, I think Moscow will aggravate Turkey’s domestic problems. Russia is able to plunge Turkey into a chaos if it is interested in that,” Papyan said.
He stressed that Armenia should take a more active position. “Armenia should not hesitate because there are serious military challenges,” he said noting that the authorities do not show an appropriate approach to the issue.
Speaking about the recent violation of Armenia’s air space by Turkish military helicopters, A. Papyan said that it did not happen by accident. He expressed perplexity over the fact that Armenian Foreign Ministry did not react to that event as it is a political issue, not a military one.
