Haykakan Zhamanak: Zurabyan’s allegations are nonsensical, Venice Commission secretary says
Secretary of the Venice Commission Thomas Markert answered the question of ‘Haykakan Zhamanak’ daily about whether they asked the Armenian authorities to be consistent regarding MP Levon Zurabyan’s allegations that Chairman of Armenia’s Constitutional Court Gagik Harutyunyan was trying to bribe the Venice Commission.
“We learned about that from the mass media reports and consider the allegations nonsensical. We did not ask the Armenian authorities to clarify the issue,” VC secretary said.
A spokeswoman for the EU, Tatyana Bayeva, said for her part: “I would like to add that the Venice Commission is an independent body of authoritative experts whose work is based on the principles of impartiality and honesty. The role of the Venice Commission does not consist in making governments accept its proposals”.
The paper says that Armenian Prosecutor General’s Office has not yet decided whether to investigate Zurabyan’s scandalous statement or not. The prosecutor’s office instructed the police to investigate the statement, but Zurabyan did not come to the police office.
