Tevan Poghosyan: Rapid signing of new agreement with the EU stems from Armenia’s interests
“If a political will is displayed, the document will be signed very soon. It really stems from Armenia’s interests,” MP of the opposition faction ‘Heritage’ Tevan Poghosyan said today during discussions over the adoption by the EU of the negotiating mandate on a new agreement with the EU.
At a meeting held in Luxembourg on October 12 the Council of the European Union authorized the European Commission and the High Representative to open negotiations on a new, legally binding and overarching agreement with Armenia, and adopted the corresponding negotiating mandate. This agreement will replace the current EU-Armenia partnership and cooperation agreement.
“One lesson to be drawn after September 3 should the following: as soon as an arrangement is reached around some clause of an agreement, the relevant information shall be given to society and the business community,” the MP said adding that they should be informed about upcoming reforms and wage a struggle if necessary.
As is known, during the talks held in Moscow on September 3, 2013, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan stated about the decision of Armenia to join the Customs Union and take all the necessary steps for that purpose, also to participate later in the establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union.
