Escalation of border situation inevitable in case of post-election developments in Azerbaijan, expert says
An escalation of the situation is inevitable on Armenia-Azerbaijan border and the line of contact between the armed forces of Karabakh and Azerbaijan, political scientist Sergei Minasyan told a press conference in Yerevan today.
“Azerbaijani troops use heavy artillery two or three times a month,” Minsyan said in response to a question about the possibility of escalation of tensions in the near future.
“If certain post-election developments occur after the upcoming parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan, then Baku will be interested in launching a new phase of escalation. Even in the absence of any pretexts, the military and political leadership of Azerbaijan will resort to that step in order to show their unwillingness to accept the realities,” the expert stressed.
According to him, the international community is not using serious levers to exert pressure on Azerbaijan, and there are no guarantees of their introduction. However, the international community stops Baku from resuming large-scale military operations, S. Minasyan said.
