Serious progress unlikely: Political scientist on regional trip of OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs
‘I don’t believe that serious progress in peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict can be achieved during the current visit or in the foreseeable future,” political scientist Sergei Minasyan told reporters today when commenting on the regional trip of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.
In his words, Armenian society grew accustomed to the fact that the Co-chairs occasionally visit the region, meet with the authorities of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Karabak, and sometimes also visit the line of contact between the armed forces of Karabakh and Azerbaijan.
“As the conflict lasts for over a quarter of the century, the societies take opposite positions, while Azerbaijani political leadership has lost a sense of reality due to oil and gas revenues, Baku is unable to make any compromises to stabilize the situation along the line of contact,” Minasyan said.
According to him, the maximum result to be expected from the current visit and further developments within the framework of OSCE Minsk Group is the arrangement of a meeting of Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan, which will show a continuation of the negotiation process.
