How Turkey parliamentary election outcome will affect relations with Armenia? Turkologist’s comments
The outcome of the snap parliamentary elections held in Turkey yesterday, on November 1, will not affect Turkey’s relations with Armenia in any way, expert on Turkey Hakob Chakryan said at a press conference today.
According to him, Turkey is now busy dealing with the Syria crisis and the Kurdish movement. “The relationship with Armenia is considered a national problem in Turkey, with a state policy, rather than a policy by a government, being implemented,” he noted.
Chakryan said that Turkey will opt to improve relations with Armenia under pressure of the West and the United States. “There is pressure now as well, but the pressure is not strong enough to make Turkey yield to it,” he added.
Commenting on the state of the Armenian community in Turkey, Hakob Chakryan said charges are not expected in this sense as well as the AK Party that won a majority of votes has been in power for 13 years.
In the November 1 elections, the ruling Justice and Development (AK) party won 49.4% of the vote, getting 316 seats in the parliament, which will give AKP an opportunity to form a government alone. The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) won 25.4%.of the vote, while the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) gained 11.9% of the votes. The pro-Kurdish HDP also surpassed the 10% threshold necessary to win seats in the new Parliament.
