Military student murder case goes to court: Interview with lawyer
The court of general jurisdiction of Kentron and Nork-marash districts in Yerevan has accepted for examination the case of Haykaz Barseghyan, a student of Vazgen Sargsyan Military Institute who was killed by fellow students in January 2015. No date for the court hearing is fixed at the moment, according to Datalex.am.
H. Barseghyan was found hanged at the sports grounds of the military institute on January 29. A criminal case was opened under Article 104 part 2 point 7 of the Criminal Code – murder committed by a group of people or an organized group. Charges were brought against four fellow students of H. Barseghyan, but the young men did not plead guilty, moreover, their lawyers declared that Haykaz Barseghyan committed suicide.
The lawyer of the aggrieved party, Garik Galikyan, told Panorama.am that those claims were refuted by forensic tests.
“Given the legal and factual circumstances of the case, the proof obtained, in particular the forensic tests’ result, it is safe to say that a murder was committed. The defense said that Haykaz Barseghyan committed suicide, which I rule out. Tests showed that hanging was not the cause of death. Haykaz was killed and then hanged,” the lawyer said noting that on the whole, he is satisfied with the outcome of the preliminary investigation.
