Speaker of Armenian parliament Galust Sahakyan responds to criticism of ex-President Robert Kocharyan
The constitutional reform in Armenia will help rule out the possibility of domination of one political party in the country, Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Galust Sahakyan said during a briefing in the parliament today when commenting on an interview of the second Armenian President Robert Kocharyan to Deutsche Welle.
In his interview, R. Kocharyan in particular said that the constitutional reform is aimed at domination of one party in Armenia.
“I don’t agree with that statement because although the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) constituted a political majority, it always assisted other political forces in participating in all processes of state building. And I stress the importance of the fact that as a result of the reform, the people will also get an opportunity to participate in the governance process,” the speaker noted.
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on August 21 sent the draft constitutional amendments to the country’s parliament. The draft was developed by the Special Commission on Constitutional Reforms adjunct to Armenian President. Following the debates, the Armenian parliament adopted on October 5 the draft decision of the National Assembly on its consent for the document to be put to a referendum. The Armenian president set December 6, 2015 as the date for the constitutional referendum. The campaign for the constitutional reform in Armenia began on October 10 and will end at midnight of December 4.
