Braille guides developed for blind voters ahead of constitutional referendum in Armenia
"We attach importance to awareness of each citizen, each voter of the voting procedure. As before, the issue of providing handicapped people with the opportunity to fully exercise their voting right is currently at the center of our attention,” Head of Armenia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) Tigran Mukuchyan said today at a meeting at the Union of the Blind of Armenia when presenting the information guides developed for people with vision problems.
Thus, one of the guides has large letters, while the other contains Braille lettering.
“Our main purpose was to ensure that the guides will not be voluminous, while providing full information about the procedure, the mechanisms of participating in the vote, and the rights and obligations of voters. This is particularly important because legislative amendments regarding participation of voters with ID cards were made recently.” T. Mukuchyan said.
Deputy Head of the Union of the Blind of Armenia NGO Martin Sargsyan said that guides will be distributed to 3,000 citizens with vision problems. Another 700 people will receive guides with Braille text.
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on August 21 sent the draft constitutional amendments to the country’s parliament. The draft was developed by the Special Commission on Constitutional Reforms adjunct to Armenian President. The president set December 6, 2015 as the date for the constitutional referendum. The campaign for the constitutional reform in Armenia began on October 10 and will end at midnight of December 4.
