Deputy FM: Armenia should follow closely developments in Russia-Turkey relations
Armenia should follow closely developments in relations between Russia and Turkey, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Shavarsh Kocharyan told a press conference today after the government session.
In his words, the deterioration of Russia-Turkey relations concerns Armenia’s ally on the one hand and its immediate neighbor on the other. “For that reason we should follow closely the developments,” he stressed.
“We welcome the fact that Russia recognized the Armenian Genocide committed in 1915 in the Ottoman Empire, and Russia has always supported criminalization of Armenian Genocide denial, which has been done so far only in four countries. So we should follow the further events”, the deputy FM noted.
It is noteworthy that the head of ‘Just Russia’ faction Sergey Mironov announced yesterday that a bill establishing liability for denial of the 1915 Armenian Genocide was introduced in Russia’s State Duma.
A Russian Su-24 jet crashed down in Syria on November 24. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the plane was shot down by an air-to-air missile from a Turkish F-16 jet and fell on Syrian territory 4 km away from the Turkish border. Putin called the jet’s downing a ‘stab in the back’.
