Euphoria over Russian State Duma bill on Armenian Genocide denial criminalization inappropriate: Melkonyan
Director of the Institute of History of National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Armenia Ashot Melkonyan urged everyone to stop euphoria over the bill, which was recently introduced in the State Duma of Russia and establishes liability for Armenian Genocide denial, Melkonyan told Panorama.am.
As was reported, on November 25 the leader of ‘Just Russia’ faction Sergei Mironov along with Vice Speaker of the State Duma Nikolai Levichev introduced a draft law criminalizing the denial of the 1915 Armenian Genocide in the lower chamber of the Russian parliament .
“I am not inspired by various decisions, statements and bills regarding the Armenian Genocide since they are inefficient for achieving compensation,” the institute director said.
In his words, if the bill’s purpose was sincere and impartial, Russia would take that step, for instance, ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide”.
