Gagik Minasyan calls campaign ahead of Armenian constitutional referendum unprecedented
The transition to a parliamentary system of government in Armenia will help solve a number of problems existing in the political system, bring about a change of power without upheavals, ensure higher rates of political and economic development, and have an electoral system free from the component of a majority, Armenian MP of the faction of ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), Head of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Financial, Credit and Budget Affairs Gagik Minasyan said at a press conference today.
“The Constitution currently in force creates ideal conditions for power reproduction, which results in upheavals. The proposed draft amendments to the Constitution of Armenia will give an opportunity to make a change of power in the country without upheavals,” G. Minasyan stressed.
“The current semi-presidential system, which is rightly criticized by the Armenian opposition, hinders the opposition’s progress, forcing the opposition to play a minor role. Such conditions are quite favorable for reproduction of the ruling political forces. Besides, the current model offers few opportunities for political and economic development,” the deputy said.
Discussing the campaign currently underway ahead of the constitutional reform referendum in Armenia, Gagik Minasyan said that thanks to ongoing debates and television programs, the level of citizens’ awareness is unprecedented.
