Alaverdyan: Armenia made progress in improving living conditions of people with disability
The Armenian mass media that avoids using discriminatory and emotional terms has played an important role in changing society’s approach to people with disability, the head of Unison NGO Armen Alaverdyan said at a press conference today.
“If we examine the public’s attitude towards people with disability 20 years ago as compared with the current approach, we will see that the result is incomparable,” he said.
When commenting on accessibility of city facilities to persons with disability, Alaverdyan said: “Whatever I say may be controversial. If I say that the city is well adapted for disabled persons, some people will disagree, and if I say the opposite, this opinion may also seem controversial. One thing is obvious: there has been progress. Most of the crossings have been adapted to meet the needs of people with disabilities”.
The International Day of People with Disability is observed on December 03, 2015. The day is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The day takes place annually and focuses on a different issue each year.
