Figure skating school, government complex, movie theatre… Armenian president opens new facilities in Yerevan
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan attended today the opening of a new government administrative complex in Yerevan, the presidential press service said. The head of state presdonally oversaw the construction work that began in 2013 by regularly visiting the building site. Today Serzh Sargsyan, accompanied by Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II, Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan, other members of the government, and Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan, toured the newly-built administrative complex and familiarized himself with the working conditions and the adjacent area equipped with modern amenities.
The project designer is Honored Architect Narek Sargsyan. The complex located in building No 2 on Vazgen Sargsyan Street in Yerevan covers an area of 33,460 square meters.
The president also participated in the opening ceremony of a new figure skating school named after world-famous figure skater Irina Rodnina. The ceremony was attended not only by high-ranking Armenian officials, but also by Irina Rodnina herself who is now a Russian MP, as well by Russian Ambassador to Armenia Ivan Volynkin, Russian President’s Special Representative for International Cultural Cooperation Mikhail Shvydkoy, famous figure skater Irina Slutskaya, and others. After touring the school building, the Armenian president watched figure skating performances on the occasion of the school opening.
The figure skating school founded back in 1971 did not function, but on the president’s initiative a new school was constructed over a short time with finds of Russia-based businessman of Armenian descent Sergey Hambartsumyan who also was present at the opening ceremony today. The total cost of the project is $7.55 million.
President Sargsyan then attended the opening of a movie theatre ‘Kinopark’ in Yerevan Mall. The modern movie theatre was built this year.
The head of state also visited the new building of Finance Ministry’s expert center for finding narcotic drugs, smuggled money, weapons and explosives. In 2015 the center moved into a new building whose construction began in 2013 and finished in 2014. A branch of the center is expected to open at Meghri customs house.
