Speaker of NA Galust Sahakyan calls opposition MP Zaruhi Postanjyan ‘effigy’
The Armenian government should bring joy to young people by its work, rather than by designating a holiday to honor youths, the head of opposition faction ‘Heritage’ Zaruhi Postanjyan said at the regular parliamentary session that started today when the parliament was debating the bill on amendments and additions to the Law on Holidays and Memorable Days. The bill proposes declaring May 7 as Youth Day in Armenia.
During the National Assembly’s sitting, Z. Postanjyan said that “youths have been unhappy in Armenia so far” and blamed it on the authorities’ policy.
In response, the parliament speaker Galust Sahakyan urged Z. Postanjyan to pity herself as well as the schoolchildren present at the NA sitting and to sum up her speech.
MPs of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia’s (RPA) faction attempted to enter into the debate and put Postanjyan to shame, but she told female MP Ruzanna Muradyan: “That’ll do! For shame!”
Z. Postanjyan then said: “The Armenian government should bring joy to young people by doing work, rather than by designating a holiday to honor them”. She reminded those present that yesterday she burned effigies of representatives of the authorities outside the office of Central Election Commission of Armenia (CEC).
“It is those who act like this that are effigies,” the NA speaker retorted, turning off Postanjyan’s microphone, which did not prevent her from continuing her speech from the rostrum.
The speaker that the parliament rostrum is not meant for desecration. He added he would ban Z. Postanjyan from attending NA sessions in case of such behavior.
