Monument to soldiers unveiled in Spitak on anniversary of 1988 earthquake
A monument to the soldiers who helped eliminate the consequences of the 1988 devastating earthquake was unveiled in the Armenian city of Spitak yesterday, on December 7, the 27th anniversary of the earthquake, the press service of Armenian Culture Ministry said.
The ceremony was attended by Armenian Culture Minister Hasmik Hakobyan, Russian Deputy Culture Minister Grigory Pirumov, Russian Ambassador to Armenia Ivan Volynkin, Mayor of Spitak Gagik Sahakyan, people involved in the earthquake elimination efforts, and the chairman of Spitak Memorail NGO Norayr Muradyan.
The monument was created in Moscow on the initiative of the Russian Military Historical Society, by a team led by architect Vadim Florov and composed of sculptor Alexander Mironov and designer Sofia Shlenkina. It is a 3.5-meter tall bronze sculpture of the Soviet soldier holding a child.
