Prosecutor general of Armenia: Number of criminal cases over referendum irregularities may change
The Office of Armenian Prosecutor General received 460 reports about voting irregularities during the December 6 constitutional referendum in Armenia, Vahagn Muradyan - the chief of the working group set up by Prosecutor’s Office to register and examine irregularities – told a press conference today.
In his words, materials were prepared based on 435 reports, criminal cases were opened into 14 facts, and in 189 instances decisions were made not to open a criminal case.
Prosecutor General of Armenia Gevorg Kostanyan said that this data can change even within 15 minutes. “Our prosecutors and investigative bodies constantly discuss TV-reported and other facts so the number of criminal cases may change,” he said.
As regards the opened criminal cases, according to Kostanyan, they are based on reports about incidents containing obvious elements of a crime.” Very often the reports about voting irregularities are of an abstract nature. The type of crime is indicated, with no information about the person, action and place,” G. Kostanyan noted.
To remind, the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Armenia has published the preliminary results of the December 6 referendum on the amendments to the Constitution of Armenia after the ballots from all 1,997 polling stations across Armenia have been processed. According to the website of CEC, 825,622 voters (63.35% of the referendum participants or 32.17% of the citizens included in the voter lists) voted for the reform. 421,593 voters (32.35% of the participants or 16.42% of the citizens included in the voter lists) voted against. Head of CEC Tigran Mukuchyan said that 1,296,368 voters or 50.51% of the total number of the citizens eligible for participation in the referendum voted as of 8:00 pm December 6 when the polls closed.
