Hayk Kyureghyan, man who opened fire at a Yerevan court, ends 25-day hunger strike in prison
Hayk Kyureghyan, a man who received 9 years in prison for opening fire outside a Yerevan court on June 12, 2014, has ended today a hunger strike he started 25 days ago, Panorama.am learned from Gor Glechyan, the head of the press service of Armenian Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Department.
On December 12, the convict’s father Armenak Kyureghyan said in a statement that his son was in an emaciated condition because of being on hunger strike for 24 days. According to the father, Hayk Kyureghyan after imprisonment began suffering from serious health problems, and he did not get effective treatment. Armenak Kyureghyan said that his son’s “life and health are in danger, but his spirit is unbending”.
Gor Glechyan told Panorama.am that an application was received from Hayk Kyureghyan earlier today regarding his decision to end his hunger strike. H. Kyureghyan’s condition is assessed as satisfactory.
On June 12, 2014, Hayk Kyureghyan, 31, climbed atop a car parked in the yard of the court of Yerevan’s Kentron and Nork-Marash districts, and declared there was a bomb in the car. He disobeyed the legal orders of policemen, pulled a pistol and fired at them. Several law enforcers received wounds and were hospitalized. In September 2015 Hayk Kyureghyan was sentenced to 9 years in prison.
