Armenian citizens could get up to 3 million dram compensation for moral damage after amendments to Civil Code
Armenian citizens could get compensation of up to 3 million drams for nonmaterial or moral damages, Deputy Justice Minister of Armenia Arman Tatoyan said at the extraordinary session of the parliament convened today on the government’s initiative as he was presenting the bill on amendments and additions to the Civil Code of Armenia regulating compensation of moral damage.
“In Armenia there is a system of compensation for moral damage, but it is not efficient, while amounts of compensation are not in line with international standards,” Tatoyan said.
He added: “The bill’s adoption will create an opportunity for Armenian citizens to get compensation for nonmaterial damage if their rights are violated because of actions or inaction of officials, state bodies, local self-government bodies, and representatives of municipal authorities”.
The deputy minister said that under the bill, citizens can get compensation for moral damage in case of violation of their right to fair trial, the right to respect for private and family life, the right to immunity of residence, the right to freedom of expression, conscience and religion, the right to freedom of assembly, the right to effective legal counsel, and the right to property.
Commenting on the amount of compensation for nonmaterial or moral damage, Tatoyan said: “Under the current law, compensation of up to 1 million drams is paid. By the bill, that amount can increase up to 3 million drams”.
