Sergei Minasyan: One sentence is noteworthy in OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs’ statement
There is still little information and we can only take as a basis the Co-chairs’ statement about the meeting. Yet, the following sentence is noteworthy in that statement: “The Presidents supported the Co-Chairs' ongoing work on proposals regarding measures to reduce the risk of violence along the Line of Contact and Armenia-Azerbaijan border, including an investigation mechanism”, political scientist Sergey Minasyan told Panorama.am, when commenting on the meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents, Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev, held in Bern today as well as the statement the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs issued following the meeting.
“If this is the case and if upon his return to Baku, Aliyev does not make a statement with the opposite meaning, then one can be cautiously optimistic that an agreement could be reached regarding stability on the line of contact. I repeat that this is possible only if the Azerbaijani side does not voice opposite statements in Baku,” Minasyan noted.
Speaking about his impressions of the presidential summit in Bern, the political scientist noted that the whole process was predictable.
“To judge from the situation, I don’t believe that today when tension was again reported on the border, the Armenian president would be delighted to meet with the Azerbaijani leader who is personally responsible for this situation. On the other hand, in politics some steps just need to be taken for the simple reason that failure to do so is fraught with greater danger,” S. Minasyan said.
